Writing an autobiography often takes us on a journey of self-discovery
Writing an autobiography can become one of the most exciting adventures of our lives because it gives us an opportunity to re-view our past as a journey toward becoming who we are today.
Suddenly you’re back at age eleven when you wrote, directed and narrated the sixth grade class play on Francis Scott Key and the story of how he wrote the our national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.”
In retrospect, you know now it was the experience of standing before the audience of other students, teachers and parents of your classmates and accepting their applause as you bowed and smiled proudly, that led to your decision to become a writer.
Was it for the applause or for the love of writing? At that moment, you weren’t sure, but now you know without a doubt that it was a combination of both.
You made a commitment to write for an audience or readership… and you made writing into your career choice because you could not not become a writer.
What wisdom do you feel compelled to impart to others—and to yourself? Where were the crossroads when you had to make serious decisions—and what do you think would have happened if you’d decided to choose “the other path”?
What were some of the most traumatic experiences in your life? How did you deal with those events?
What once seemed tragic may now seem bitter-sweet or even humorous; what once seemed second-nature (raising the kids, working full-time, dealing with a husband who was gone most of the time, caring for sick parents, etc.) now may seem overwhelming.

How did you do it? What kept you going? What was the spiritual glue that kept your life together during those hard years when you or your husband lost your job or one of your children was killed in an auto accident… How did you keep on keeping on?
We humans have so much to share. Writing an autobiography may help you realize that your life often has a deeper meaning that only starts to reveal itself when you give yourself the opportunity to re-live it through your memoirs.
As we shape thee common tears and laughter into “our story,” we realize we now have the opportunity to become not only the narrator but a commentator but as a “wisdom keeper.”
