Using apostrophes correctly - How?
Using apostrophes incorrectly is one of my pet peeves... I often wonder how even the best educated and most professional writers fall into a bottomless Ditz Pit and get it wrong.
Where did they learn, for example, that “it’s” is a possessive? It is not. “Its” is the proper way to write: “Its most important function is…” “We can easily use how to adapt to its newest features…”
Who ever placed that apostrophe between the “t” and “s”? Was there a usage book somewhere that became the bible for major universities, writing teachers and editors? If so, I haven’t seen it.
Please note:
The letters I, T and S with an apostrophe between the T and S means “IT IS.”
It’s a great day.
It’s a pleasure to meet you.
One of these days it’s going to
rain.
I’d love it if it’s going to mean
you’ll stay a day longer.
Using apostrophes to indicate possessive does happen; it just doesn’t occur for the little word “its.” For example, you can say:
the people’s monetary system
her mother’s best friend
the children’s caretaker
teachers’ pets
the teacher's (just one teacher) pet
House and family name signs
That brings up another pet peeve: ownership signs posted in front of a family’s property. Which is correct?
The Smiths
The Smiths’
The Smith’s
The Smithes
